Hello Experts,

We are in the middle of trying to figure out what would be the best Backup Exec 2010 Agents & Options for our VMware environment.

Planned environment

Physical Servers/Hardware:

2 ESXi servers (5.0)
1 Backup Server (Windows Server 2008)
1 vCenter Server (Windows Server 2008)
  VNX5300 storage solution (Fibre Channel)

VM Servers:

2 Active Directory/DNS
1 SQL Server 2008
Multiple Application Servers for running custom software

Looking at the Agents and Options for Backup Exec I seem to be needing the following:

VMware Virtual Infrastructure

Microsoft Active Directory Agent - Is this needed for AD in VM?

SQL Server Agent - I am not sure we need this if we just use the SQL Server for database backups and have the backup server access those from the storage array.

Windows System Agent - Will we need this to backup files on the physical servers?

Advanced Disk-based Backup - Would this be a good option? I see it helps free resources on machines being backuped.

Do you need to Backup just Virtual VMs?

If so I would recommend Veeam Backup and Replication over Backup Exec.

No, we will need to backup physical machines as well, mainly vCenter. Also, we will need to backup data outside of the VMs that will also be stored on the VNX storage.

jb428j  - by far and away best backup solution I have found and capable of bare metal restores.   We suffered a client server crash and trying Symantec bare metal restore was a nightmare, this solution SIRIS at  is super easy, quick to restore and capable of migration of the spun-up VM back to the original server once repaired.

I think we are going to go with something like below:

Backup Exec 2010 R3 Windows Server
2x Backup Exec Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure
2x Backup Exec Agent for Active Directory
1x Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft SQL Servers
1x Backup Exec Agent for Windows Systems

Anyone see anything wrong with this?

Also, the backup server will be pushing to DataDomain for deduplication to our DRS sites. So no deduplication solutions will be needed.

I also selected my comment because it is what worked best for us. Unfortunately, we do not have access to the other programs listed above.
