Hi, I had a pc crash due to some software. It is a laptop running windows xp 32bit xp3. I have it recovered without a rebuild, but the only issue I see is when I go to the windows updates page using ie8 it goes there to a blank screen and just says done on the bottom left. I don’t get an error. Now Windows update is working because I got the yellow shield today and there were updates to apply and they worked fine. I just don’t know why the update page is blank. Could it be a registry error?

If you have Spybot - S&D installed, update it and run a scan.

Check the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file, and see if it contains anything unusual.  It is possible that something has hijacked the hosts file to prevent your system from accessing the Windows monthly malware updates.

Also run a complete virus scan.  The Symantec online scanner is a good web-based scanner, which seems to find things the others do not.  Unfortunately, it can only be run from Internet Explorer, and is very slow.

Reinstall the windows update agent using the /wuforce switch

To force the install, download WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe and run the following command;

"WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce"

    To install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe silently run the following command; "WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce /quiet"
    To install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe silently without restart, run the following command; "WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce /quiet /norestart"

For x86-based computers (WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe)

For x64-based computers (WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe)
