We are trying to get our phone to work with a hosted phone system. The phones are all about 6 years old and they consist of 7940, 7960, 7970 and 7934 models. The problem we are running into is that the phones don't seem to want to upgrade to the newer firmware. The 7940's are currently on 7.2 (3.0) and the host is trying to pipe down 8.1 (2.0). I'm told I need to do an intermediate upgrade to 8.0.10 in order for this to work automatically. I was given a file a file called cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-0-10.cop.sgn. I'm thinking I can use some shareware TFTP software on a PC to do these upgrades. Does that make sense to and of your Cisco Voip guru's out there?

Thanks!

This file:  cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-0-10.cop.sgn  will only work if you install it on a Call Manager.  you need to get the ZIP file instead.

You may change the extension of the package to tar.gz, and then unzip and extract the firmware files. COP.SGN is an extension for a CallManager to patch its database.

I have the SolarWinds TFTP server running on my PC. I think I only need to change the TFTP server to point to the PC. My question now is, once I rename it from:

cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-0-10.cop.sgn

to:

cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-0-10.tar.gz

How do i then extract it to the TFTP folder?

Thanks!

when i used WinRar to try and extract that tar.gz file, it gave me an error saying it was an unknown format.

the TFTP log on the PC appears to be getting requests for the following files....

XMLDefault.cnt.xml
SEP00114ABCABCABCABCE.cnf.xml
CTLSEP00114ABCABCABCABCE.ltv

My apologies, I read this from a thread a while ago, just found from my own experienced that it doesn't work.

I don't have a CD burner right now, but maybe if you burn the COP.SGN as a DVD image (the way Cisco recommends to use it) you can then read the contents from it.

The IP Phone requests the SEP00114ABCABCABCABCE.cnf.xml where it read which firmware load to take. Then it goes and tries to pull it down if different from the current one.

Since that file is is mac address specific, it would not be included in that cop.sgn file. In the absence of a mac address specific file i'd like to just get it grab whatever is in the TFTP folder in terms of upgrading the phone's firmware. But I'm still not sure how to get the files i need from that cop.sgn file.

By design the file won't be inside the COP.SGN file.
