My nephew (12 yrs old) is interested in getting into editing videos.

He's running a Win XP SP3 and can't afford the upgrade to Vista/7. ;-) He's using Windows Movie Maker -- but apparently it can't handle MP4.

Does anyone have some open source/freeware video editing SW he can use.

I just spent the Friday after Thanksgiving cleaning loads of crap from his search for a video editing program.

Try downloading Windows Live Essentials. Bundled in it is the upgrade of the windows Movie maker. Install it and see if it works.
Good luck

VirtualDub http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualDub will probably do simple editing for his purposes.
