I have systems I need to configure that require approximately 70 applications to be installed and configured.  This process normally takes 20 to 24 face-time hours to complete.  Is there a good process, or software package, where I can create the necessary image and registry entries from an existing configuration?  I'd like to store this image on the server.  We also need to have it be able to be used on Windows XP Professional, Windows 7 (32 & 64 Bit).  I'd like it to be independent of the machine manufacturer, model, and memory amount, if possible.

If you have 70+ machines then maybe look at SCCM also. Not only gives you the deployment side of things but lots of management tools/info/reports after going forward.

I always use sysprep to prepare the machine for imaging, and Ghost corporate edition.  Tried and true, great results.

You can use Acronis True Image
It helps in creating an image and deploying it to the workstations. The new version shows a recovery console as well to press F11 during boot to recover the systems from a remote server. Its comes in with an excellent feature of universal restore which helps you to deploy image of one machine to a different machine having totally different hardware configuration etc
Further if you are in a network environment Acronis have a software called Snap Deploy which helps you deploying the image on remote machines :)
Enjoy
